Creating and Sustaining New Agrarians in the West:

Apprenticeship, training. and technical assistance for beginning ranchers and farmers on large-acreage operations.

We have partnered with Quivira Coalition to explore enterprise stacking on agricultural operations with the goal of improving the success of beginning ranchers and farmers on large-landscape operations in the West. In the first phase of the project we will be case-studying past or current examples of new agrarians who have incubated enterprises into larger land base operations and/or were part of a transition of an existing business.

As part of this 3 year project we will create a toolkit that will highlight examples of farms and ranches that have provided incubation opportunities for new agrarians to develop their careers after apprenticeships or initial agricultural training. Specific focus will be on how these new agrarians incubated their own enterprises though stacking a symbiotic enterprise with the core agricultural business. Our toolkit will provide a framework and resources for other operations, such as contract and memorandum of understanding templates, tips for enterprise stacking, critical questions to explore before getting started, and other resources.

One on one technical assistance will be available for new agrarians and the operations they are working with over the life of the project. Technical assistance will be provided to the new agrarian, as well as the existing operation and will involve combined virtual meeting time and/or agreement development and consulting.
